The world is such a messed up place. A man was unconscious on a plane with a doctor two rows away. Emergency care is delayed because the flight attendant doesn’t believe a black woman is a doctor. Dafuq? This is a true story and shows the reality of what people of color go through.
The medical misdaventure came to light after Tamika Cross shared her experience on Facebook. The physician was on a Delta flight trying to care for an unresponsive passenger. A flight attendant demanded her “credentials” and confirmation that she was a real physician.
“She said to me: ‘Oh no, sweetie put ur hand down; we are looking for actual physicians or nurses or some type of medical personnel. We don’t have time to talk to you,'” Cross told The New York Times.
Her story has been shared more than 38,000 times and had attracted more than 14,000 comments.
The Most Depressing Part…
It was also shared widely on Twitter under the hashtags #TamikaCross and #WhatDoctorsLookLike to highlight offensive assumptions about diversity in the medical field.
Cross said told the Times that she had written her Facebook post during the layover before traveling to Houston. She then filed an official complaint with the airline and received a general reply that the airline was investigating and did not discriminate.
How do you feel about this? Do you have any professional friends of color that have been discriminated against? It’s sad isn’t it? Maybe one day we will look past color and see that all men are created equal.
